Orthotics – A Solution for Plantar Fasciitis

At Avenue Osteopathic Practice our prescription orthotics are manufactured to support the arches of the feet.  This is most important in the treatment of plantar fasciitis as the medial arch of the foot is the most common cause of the pain.  A pair of correctly prescribed orthotics can cure plantar fasciitis within two or so weeks, but in many cases instant relief is felt and patients are able to return to normal activity.

Plantar fasciitis is caused when a large ligament in the sole of the foot (the plantar fasci) becomes inflamed and painful. The symptoms are often worse first thing in the morning and can ease slightly with activity, but then return shortly afterwards.

The plantar facia ligament is put under increased pressure when the medial arch of the foot loses some of its height. As we get older it is normal for the arches in our feet to begin to drop in height.  This naturally occurring process is often accelerated by overuse. As a result, people who spend all day standing on their feet, athletes or people who have put on weight over time, are more vulnerable. As we cannot avoid using our feet in our day to day life, the plantar fasciitis is continually being irritated and therefore never allowed enough time to fully heal.
